What gear do i use?

A question often asked, as sometimes we can feel that it can be difficult to get great pictures with an everyday compact camera.

There is no secrets or magic formula though. Good gear can help , of course, but what matters is what you do with it.

Here is what i carry in my camera bag :

Camera body : Canon 5D mk II
with over 21 megapixels, it is a great camera , and will allow for photographs to be printed very big if necessary.

Lenses:    Your camera is only ever as good as the lens you put on it .
Canon 17/ 40 mm L lens – a great wide angle lens that will allow for impressive vistas.
Canon 24 / 105 mm is L lens – a very sharp multi – purpose lens with built in anti-vibration mecanism.
Canon 70 / 200 mm F4 L lens – a very sharp zoom lens ( soon to be replaced by a canon 100 / 400 mm L lens for better reach on a full frame camera)

Remote shutter release – for vibrations free shots

Filters: A set of Cokin and Lee filters , Neutral density, graduated neutral density, polariser and uv filters ( more about filters in a specific post soon)

Tripods : i have two SLIK tripods , one heavy duty , very good in windy conditions or when standing in water but cumbersome . and a lighter version great when you travel.

What can we find in the Gallery?

On display in the gallery a wide range of landscape photography from Ireland .

A good number of photographs from the picturesque conemara, alongside shots taken in kinvara,

county Galway, and all over county Clare, from Ballyvaughan to Loop Head.

All prints are available mounted or framed.

All mounts, frames and prints are made in Ireland using the best quality mounts, papers, inks, and frames moulds.

The Gallery : opening day.

The west coast gallery’s opening day went really well.

I had a good few visitors, and they all seemed to like the pictures and the simple layout of the gallery.
Of course, it is only the first day, and i can’t even say that everything was ready for it!

I am still waiting for business cards, flyers, and outdoor display signs and banners, in order to let people know about the gallery.

But things will fall into place.

At almost 40 i have finally realised a lifelong dream  : setting up my own photography gallery…

the most difficult remains to be done : making it work!

West Coast Gallery official opening:

Only two days left. From Friday the 27 th the west coast photography’s real life gallery will open in the coastal village of Lahinch, county Clare, Ireland.
This is where i have been based for almost ten years, and is the place that i have chosen to exhibit my work.
After spending all winter turning what used to be a car shed into a Gallery , i am almost getting there, never been so close in fact!
and i have to admit, i am getting a bit nervous….
For the first time peope will have the possibility to have a look at my work, ‘in the flesh’ , and will be able to let me know what they think about it…..(?!??…)     And, if they wish to do so , to purchase or not some of the mounted or framed prints on offer.
The great thing is pictures always look better printed on a quality photographic paper, surrounded by a nice acid free white mount nicely framed , than on a webpage.
So fingers crossed , …and toes too.( you never know.)
But whatever happens on friday, it is a very exiting adventure.

At the end of the day photographers rarely take pictures only for their own viewing.
Photography is made to be shared , and enjoyed by as many people as possible.
So , see you there , drop in for a look, hope you enjoy it.

Social Vibe

The social vibe widget, visible on the left habdside of this blog, is a way for me and you to support a cause,  clicking on the social vibe link release funds donated by different companies to the association i chose to display on my blog.

Because of my very work in photography, and the fact that i live and grew up in coastal area and worked as a sailing instructor, the sea conservation has always been a concern, that is why i chose to support the Surfrider organisation  through this blog.

Surfrider is a non profit environmental organisation dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. So do not hesitate toclick and raise funds to save the oceans.

I hope this will keep you interested, next post during the week.

Cheers.

the NEW gallery

It has taken all winter, but i am getting there. In the next couple of weeks i am going to open a landscape photography gallery in the village of Lahinch , county Clare, on the west coast of Ireland.

Situated less than 20 metres from the beach, the setting is great. the gallery will be filled with pictures  taken during the last couple of years, most of them in Clare from Ballyvaughan to Loop head , but also in the connemara and kerry.

Customers will be able to purchase mounted and framed prints , and we will also offer fine art limited edition prints.

The Gallery will also be a great base to organise landscape photography workshops in the future.

So watch this space for pictures of the gallery in the next couple of weeks , and if you happen to be in the vicinity, pay us a visit.

Philippe.
